Adobe Philanthropy Council
We support nonprofit organizations that service disadvantaged youth, the homeless, people with disabilities, minorities, the elderly, and victims of abuse; provide disaster relief, medical and hospice care, and meal service; provide education and literacy programs; support human rights; support the arts; protect the environment; and support animal rights.

FundsNet Services Online
This very comprehensive, privately-owned web site was created to provide nonprofit organizations, colleges and universities with information on financial resources available on the Internet. It is packed with information and links to funding resources and grants. Bear with the advertisements; the site is worth it.

LINCS-reviewed Resources for Grants/Funding
LINCS is a gateway to education and literacy resources on the Internet. Its site includes this excellent, up-to-date list of upcoming grants, many of which may be of interest to the disability organizations. The grants are arranged chronologically (by due date) and link to additional information about them.

Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation
The mission of the MEA Foundation is to contribute to a better world for us all by helping young people with disabilities, through technology, to maximize their potential and participation in society.

NEC Foundation of America
NEC Foundation of America makes cash grants to nonprofit organizations and programs with national reach and impact in one or both of the following arenas: science and technology education, principally at the secondary level, and/or the application of technology to assist people with disabilities.

This extensive site includes the Philanthropy News Digest, information and links for grantmakers, an online library chock full of resources for grantseekers (including a "foundation finder" and an "online librarian"), and much more. Parts of this site are fee-based.

Specifically the Foundation concentrates its funding in the areas of literacy, digital divide, women and economic development, people with disabilities, education/scholarships, and community development.

Ability OnLine Support Network
Ability OnLine "is a friendly and safe computer friendship network where children and youth with disabilities or chronic illnesses connect to each other as well as to their friends, family members, caregivers and supporters." New users must register, after which they receive their own e-mail address and can connect with one another through e-mail or live chats. There are separate areas reflecting a wide variety of topics and age-specific interests, as well as areas for caregivers and healthcare professionals. The registration process, which requires real names and addresses (a keyword is sent to registrants by postal mail) is unwieldy but helps to ensure security. The site claims that online volunteers monitor the public content 24 hours a day.

Children with Diabetes - Children's Corner
Learn how to cope with diabetes, how to make blood tests and shots as easy as possible, where to find camps or scholarships, how to join the kids and teens mailing lists, and more, in this section of the Children with Diabetes web site.

Disability Central & Active Teen
Previously listed on this page as Active Teen, this website now includes a "general" disability section as well as an "editorial area by teens for teens, including the e-zine for disabled teens, Beyond All Barriers!" The latter includes articles, interviews, etc., some of general interest and some specifically geared to teens. There are also chat rooms and message boards. While we found the site confusing to navigate and the features of mixed quality, this is one of a relatively few decent sites specifically for young adults. Teens that are willing to spend the time here will find articles and interactive opportunities that are really oriented towards them, such as dating, scholarships, and recreation.

Family Village
When we first reviewed Family Village, a virtual village of links and support for parents of children with disabilities, we called it the best site of its kind, and gave it our first red star. The extensive site includes a "library" with general and disability-specific subject links, message boards, chat groups, a shopping mall, and more.

Family Voices
Family Voices is "a national, grassroots clearinghouse for information and education concerning the health care of children with special health needs." Its web site includes a bimonthly newsletter and weekly news update, as well as information about the organization and its publications.

Institute for Child Health Policy
The Institute focuses on children in managed care with special a emphasis on children with special health care needs. Its web site offers a wealth of information about policy/program development, health services research and evaluation programs.

LD OnLine's KidZone
This section of LD OnLine features an art gallery and kids' magazine, as well as things to read, hear, and do.

KidsHealth
Sponsored by nonprofit Nemours Foundation, this extensive website features separate sections for parents, kids and teens. The parents' section has thousands of easy-to-find, health-related articles; though not specifically geared to parents of children with disabilities, it includes many good articles about specific conditions. The upbeat kids and teens sections likewise include information about specific disabilities and chronic illnesses as well as information that will interest all young people.

National Fathers' Network
"Dedicated to providing support and resources for fathers and families of children with special needs," this site is packed with information by and for fathers of children with disabilities (including articles in Spanish), photos, a special section for providers, and much more.

National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities (NICHCY)
NICHCY is the national information and referral center that provides information on disabilities and disability-related issues for families, educators, and other professionals. NICHCY's web site features its excellent fact sheets, resource guides and other publications about specific disabilities and disability-related issues. Many of the publications are available in Spanish.

National Parent Network on Disabilities (NPND)
Information, legislation, advocacy, and more. This website is especially valuable for its current information and links relating to "hot issues" and legislation affecting children with disabilities.

Our Kids
The home page of a wonderful online support group for parents, caregivers and others who are working with children with physical and/or mental disabilities and delays. The site includes subscription information and archives, members' home pages, links, resources, reading lists, and more.

Parents Helping Parents, Inc.
The web site of this family resource center includes an extensive, easy-to-search database of national organizations involved with children with disabilities.

WOW Online!
The web site of Winners On Wheels (WOW), a non-profit social and recreational program for children who use wheelchairs. Provides information about basic internet surfing skills, offers youngsters an opportunity see their creative genius displayed, and provides e-mail based pen-pal connections.

AHEAD (Association on Higher Education and Disability)
AHEAD is a professional organization founded "to address the need and concern for upgrading the quality of services and support available to persons with disabilities in higher education." Its web site includes information about membership, conferences, publications, legal information (including relevant court decisions and OCR findings), job information, and related resources.

Distance Education and Training Council (DETC)
The DETC is a nonprofit educational association that "serves as a clearinghouse of information about the distance study/correspondence field and sponsors a nationally recognized accrediting agency called the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council." Its member institutions offer more than 500 different academic, vocational, and avocational courses by mail or by telecommunications. Its web site includes a directory of accredited institutions, an index to subjects taught, and a guide to degree programs, as well as extensive information about distance education and distance educatioin resources.

Division for Early Childhood (DEC) of the Council for Exceptional Children
Dedicated to promoting policies and practices that support families and enhance the optimal development of children from birth through age eight, this professional organization's web site offers position statements and policies, governmental information and children action network alerts, listservs, links, and related material.

National Center for the Study of Post-secondary Educational Supports
Based at the University of Hawaii's Center on Disability Studies, this Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (RRTC) studies the nature and range of supports and postsecondary programs, the contribution of technological advances and their impact, the effectiveness of supports as measured against outcomes, and how educational supports carry over to employment. Most of the web site is about the RRTC itself, although researchers can find some good articles about postsecondary educational supports in the "Products" section.

National Home Education Network
This organization assists state and local homeschooling groups and individuals. Look here for good information about homeschooling support groups, new homeschoolers, military homeschoolers, high school and beyond, legislation, events, and news.

National Home Education Research Institute (NHERI)
NHERI produces statistics, research, and technical reports on home education, and serves as a clearinghouse of research for home educators, researchers, and policy makers.

NEADS (National Educational Association of Disabled Students
NEADS is a Canadian-based consumer organization with a mandate to "encourage the self-empowerment of post-secondary students with disabilities." Its web site includes information about the organization, resources for students with disabilities in Canada, and related items.

United States Distance Learning Association
This association and its web site are geared primarily for professionals in the distance learning field. The "Links to Programs" page is still under development.

Zero to Three
This national, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the healthy development of babies and young children offers a wealth of information about child development for parents and professionals.

The Active Living Coalition for Older Adults (ALCOA) strives to promote a society where all older Canadians are leading active lifestyles that contribute to their overall well-being.

Active Living Alliance for Canadians
The Active Living Alliance for Canadians with a Disability (ALACD) promotes, supports and enables Canadians with disabilities to lead active, healthy lives. We provide nationally coordinated leadership, support, encouragement, promotion and information that facilitates healthy, active living opportunities for Canadians of all abilities across all settings and environments.

Center for Research on Women with Disabilities (CROWD)
Based at Baylor College of Medicine, CROWD is a research center that focuses on issues related to health, aging, civil rights, abuse, and independent living. CROWD researchers develop and evaluate models for interventions to address specific problems affecting women with disabilities. Its web site is packed with information about research relating to the "National Study of Women with Physical Disabilities," access to health care by women with disabilities, abuse, and community living.

Center for Self-Determination
"The Center for Self-Determination is not a place. It is a highly interactive working collaborative of individuals and organizations committed to the principles of self-determination. The purpose of the collaborative is to change the nature of the support and service system for individuals with disabilities...." The Center's nicely designed website includes a wide range of articles, a guide to self-determination sites in each state, events, and links.

Canadian Association of Independent Living Centres (CAILC)
CAILC's web site includes information about the history and philosophy of independent living; essays, articles and links; and more.

Independent Living Institute
The Independent Living Institute offers resources for persons with extensive disabilities and develops consumer-driven policies for self-determination, self-respect and dignity.

North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC)
NACAC is a national organization that advocates the right of every child to a permanent, continuous, nurturing and culturally sensitive family, and presses for the legal adoptive placement of any child denied that right. Its focus is on hard-to-place children, including those with disabilities.

Parents with Disabilities Online
An outgrowth of "Diana Michelle's Home Page" (aka "Trish and John's Resources for Parents with Disabilities"), this site bills itself as "The Internet's One-stop Resource for Parents with Disabilities" - and it's pretty darn close. The work of Trish Day, a mom with cerebral palsy, the site features information about the Parent Empowerment Network (an e-mail group for parents with disabilities), lots of resources, adaptive parenting aids, medical resources, family stories, and links.

Women with DisAbilities
A service of the National Women's Health Information Center (NWHIC), this web site is filled with information for women with disabilities, family members and professionals. Topics covered include abuse, access to health care, breast health access, financial assistance, laws and regulations, minorities, older women, parenting, reproductive health, services and support, sexuality, statistical information, substance abuse, and particular disabilities. Each section includes an overview and links to pertinent publications and organizations.

The Agency is responsible for ensuring that undue obstacles to the mobility of persons with disabilities are removed from federally regulated transportation services and facilities. The Agency removes undue obstacles in two ways: on a case-by-case basis by resolving individual complaints, and on a systemic basis by developing regulations, codes of practice and standards concerning the level of accessibility in modes of transport under federal jurisdiction, such as air, rail, and marine.
